What is a robotaxi
A robotaxi is basically a taxi that drives itself. It picks you up and takes you where you need to go — no human driver needed. Robotaxis use sensors, cameras, radar, and smart software to figure out where they are, make decisions, and safely move through traffic.
They also rely on artificial intelligence and machine learning to spot things like traffic lights, pedestrians, and other cars, helping them drive safely and smoothly.

Robotaxis are smart — they can plan faster routes and work together with other vehicles to cut down traffic and get you where you're going quicker. Plus, since they run on electricity, they're better for the environment too. And the best part? Sharing a robotaxi could cost you way less than owning a car or taking a regular cab.
Robotaxi services in Las Vegas
The Zoox (Amazon subsidiary) robotaxi has been on Las Vegas public roads since June 16, 2023. Starting September 10, 2025, Zoox launched the Zoox service on and around the Las Vegas Strip. Rides are free and available through the Zoox app.
As of April 2025, Waymo is actively testing its autonomous vehicles in Las Vegas; however, Waymo robotaxis are not yet available for public rides.
In March 2026, Uber announced that it will bring back Motional rides and also Zoox on the Uber app starting in summer 2026.
Can a robotaxi get a parking ticket?
Yes. Robotaxis must follow the same parking laws as any other vehicle. If a robotaxi waits in a no-parking zone, blocks traffic or pedestrian access, or parks near a fire hydrant or driveway, it can receive a parking ticket. In most cases, the citation is issued to the vehicle's owner or operator rather than to a human driver.
Robotaxis don't receive special exemptions from parking laws simply because they drive themselves. In 2024, Waymo paid 589 parking tickets and about $65,000 in fines.
Why can't I book a robotaxi?
A robotaxi may be unavailable due to routine maintenance or unusually high demand, especially during special events in Las Vegas.
Can a robotaxi get a speeding ticket?
In theory, yes. Although robotaxis are designed to obey posted speed limits, they can receive a speeding ticket if they violate traffic laws. However, based on our experience using robotaxis in Las Vegas and San Francisco, they tend to drive cautiously and often more conservatively than human drivers.
Can a robotaxi get pulled over by the police?
Yes. Police officers can pull over a robotaxi if they believe it has violated a traffic law. Robotaxis are designed to recognize police lights and sirens and safely pull over. Once stopped, the vehicle typically connects the officer with the robotaxi's remote support team through the car's speakers or other communication system.
Can a robotaxi get a flat tire?
Yes. Like any other vehicle, a robotaxi can get a flat tire. If that happens, the vehicle is designed to stop safely, notify the robotaxi company, and request roadside assistance.
In case of an accident
In Las Vegas or Nevada, we don't have any specific rules for accidents caused by a robotaxi.
In case of an accident, the same rules apply as in any other motor vehicle accident.
a) The attorney must prove that negligence caused the collision,
b) Connect that negligence to the victim, and
c) File a claim for monetary compensation for all medical bills (past, present, and future) and other damages.
Who is liable?
Under current law, the at-fault driver (or their driver's insurance) is financially responsible for all damages, including medical bills, lost wages and loss of future earning capacity, property damage, pain and suffering, rehabilitation and ongoing care costs. But in a fully autonomous robotaxi, the human driver doesn't exist.
The primary liability in robotaxi accidents lies on the vehicle owner or operator. Their business insurance will pay for all damages. The way it stands today, in most cases, the owners and operators of robotaxi fleets are vehicle manufacturers. Some ride-sharing companies also own robotaxis.
What to do after a robotaxi accident
The same as after any other motor vehicle accident: first, seek medical attention if anyone is injured. Next, contact the police, document the scene by recording the location, date, and time, and take as many photos as possible of the vehicle, any damage, and the surrounding area.

Is the robotaxi always at-fault?
No. Other drivers can be negligent, pedestrians can break traffic rules, or people can intentionally interfere with the vehicle to cause a crash.
What are the primary causes of robotaxi crashes?
Self-driving taxis have logged millions of autonomous miles in San Francisco, Phoenix, Las Vegas, and other U.S. cities. However, robotaxis are not immune to accidents. Like conventional vehicles, they share the road with human drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians, and collisions can still occur. For example, shortly after Waymo began operating in Las Vegas, one of its vehicles was rear-ended by another driver.
Robotaxi crashes can occur due to:
Human driver error. Other motorists may speed, follow too closely, drive distracted, or make unsafe turns, leading to collisions with robotaxis.
Pedestrians & cyclists. Unexpected actions by pedestrians or cyclists can create situations that are difficult for any vehicle to avoid.
Severe weather conditions. Heavy rain, fog, dust, or bright sunlight can reduce sensor performance. Las Vegas has become an important testing location because autonomous vehicles are evaluated here in challenging conditions such as extreme heat and dust storms.
Road construction. Temporary lane closures, faded lane markings, missing signs, and unusual road layouts can make navigation more complex for both human and autonomous drivers.
Intentional interference. Vandalism or deliberate attempts to obstruct sensors or confuse the vehicle can create hazardous situations.
The long-term goal of robotaxis is not to eliminate every accident, but to reduce crashes by minimizing the human errors - such as distraction, fatigue, and impaired driving - that cause the vast majority of collisions today.
First responders
Police and fire departments are now getting special training on handling robotaxi accidents. Waymo prepared an Emergency Response Guide and Law Enforcement Interaction Protocol for first responders.
Like any other vehicle, the police will check for a robotaxi vehicle registration, auto insurance, and a permit to operate in Nevada. Robotaxi services also provide Rider Support and Road Assistance in case of vehicle malfunction or collision.

NRS-482A covers Nevada laws and regulations for autonomous vehicles.
NRS-482B governs alternative electronic transportation systems, including remotely operated vehicles.
Settlements
Attorneys typically use medical bills - covering past, present, and future expenses - to calculate compensation for injuries sustained in an accident. If there are no medical bills and only property damage, the person who was affected can file a liability claim directly with the at-fault party's insurance. In most cases, the insurance company will pay this claim.
The same applies to any robotaxi accident.
When multiple parties are involved
Nevada law allows you to file a lawsuit against some or all defendants responsible for the accident. Also, if multiple victims were involved, under Nevada law, all victims who filed a claim must be compensated for damages. The same rules apply if you get in an accident involving a robotaxi.
If you were partially at fault
Nevada uses the rule of modified comparative negligence. It means the plaintiff can collect compensation from all other at-fault parties if the plaintiff was less than 51% responsible for the accident. The same is true about robotaxi accidents.
Victims with prior injuries
A robotaxi or not, pre-existing injuries may affect your settlement. You are still entitled to accident compensation, but it may lead to a smaller payment in some cases.
Do I need an attorney?
Not always. Insurance companies in Nevada pay many liability claims without the need for legal action.
